Step out into Zealandia's sanctuary valley. Essentially a "mainland island," the sanctuary is protected by a unique predator-proof fence designed to keep out introduced mammals that have devastated much of our country's unique flora and fauna. Explore easy walking tracks through 225 hectares of lush regenerating forest, and spy on tuatara, kaka, kereru, takahe, saddleback and many more. There are also tramping tracks if you’re that way inclined.

After your walk, grab a bite at Rata, Zealandia's terrace cafe. The view across the lake makes this one of the best eating spots in Wellington. Rata offers quality free-range, organic, local produce, a selection of beer and wines, and picnic items.

Aotearoa's award-winning eco-attraction, Zealandia is home to dozens of native species. Many of the animals and plants at Zealandia are highly endangered, and some are practically extinct on the mainland of NZ.
