Once upon a time there was a Dutch explorer named Abel Tasman. He set sail one fine day in 1642 in search of exotic foreign lands, and exotic foreign lands he did find. A skirmish ensued and Tasman hitched up anchor and farewelled the beautiful bay, but not before naming it Murderers Bay. Other explorers stopped in at the bay in later years, from English explorer James Cook to French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville. Then sometime after 1840, locals struck gold and the bay was renamed Golden Bay, which we know today as one of the most spectacular regions in New Zealand.
