The Albatross is a magnificent creature. With their ability to soar great distances, while making it all look effortless is something that we can all appreciate. The Royal Albatross Centre on Taiaroa Head is the southern hemisphere's only mainland breeding colony for the Albatross species. Offering unparalleled views of the amazing bird, the centre now boasts a colony of around 140 birds.
Thanks to the Royal Albatross Centre we're bringing you a deal that'll let you get amazing views of the albatross as well as a complete history of the species and more. Pay $25 for an adult's ticket or $12 for a child's ticket for a guided tour of the Royal Albatross Centre along with the Fort Taiaroa tour and bring the family for a day of adventure.
The Royal Albatross Centre sits at the foot of Taiaroa Head and provides full tours to excited visitors all year round. You'll begin your day long adventure in the centre's foyer where the history of the Maori people of the headland can be read off a carved Poutokomanawa pole. Your guide will give you an introduction to the Royal Albatross and entice and surprise you with the birds history. A walk to the observatory is next, where you'll get to to view the albatross up close. This is the perfect chance to get some great pictures as the bird's large wings are at full span. Next, you'll get to learn more about the history and wildlife of the region at the McMillan Gallery. The fun doesn't stop there, you'll delight in a 30-minute guided tour of underground Fort Taiaroa. It was built on the headland to counter the potential threat of a Russian invasion in the late 1880s and later used for training and defence during World War One and World War Two. This is your change to see the only fully restored 1889 Armstrong Disappearing Gun in the world in its original position. Unwind afterwards at the Royal Albatross Cafe and pick up a souvenir while you're there.
